A special court in Bengaluru has sentenced Prajwal Revanna, a former MP, to life imprisonment for raping a 47-year-old domestic worker. The court also ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 10 lakh and instructed that the victim should receive Rs 7 lakh in compensation.
The Case and Verdict
Prajwal Revanna, who is the grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, was found guilty of multiple crimes, including rape, sexual harassment, voyeurism, and destroying evidence. The verdict came about 14 months after his arrest, and the trial was completed in just eight weeks.
Before the sentence was announced, Revanna cried in court and asked for a lighter punishment.
The Investigation
The case became a big deal after many explicit videos were shared online in his constituency. This led to Revanna leaving the country for Germany in 2024. He was arrested when he came back to India on May 31.
The woman who was raped filed a police complaint after she was saved from a farmhouse. She said she was held there to stop her from reporting the crimes. A special team of 40 members looked into the case and prepared a five-volume report. The prosecution presented evidence from 26 witnesses and 180 documents during 38 court hearings.
Revanna is still facing trial in three other related cases.
