Modi Urges Indians to Choose Local Amid Global Trade Tensions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has renewed his call for Indians to support locally-made products. His appeal, made on a Saturday in his Varanasi constituency, comes at a time of rising global economic uncertainty and new tariffs imposed by the United States.

The "Vocal for Local" Message

Modi asked every citizen to adopt the "Vocal for Local" mantra, a campaign that promotes the purchase of homegrown goods and businesses. He stressed that India must stay focused on its own economic interests as it moves toward becoming the world's third-largest economy.

The Prime Minister urged people to consider the origin of every purchase. He said, "Whatever we buy, we should ask ourselves, has an Indian toiled to make this? If it has been made by the sweat of our people, with their skills, that product is Swadeshi for us."

Why Now? The Context of Tariffs

This renewed push for local products follows a decision by US President Donald Trump to place a 25% tariff on Indian exports. Modi's speech, while not directly mentioning the US, highlighted that countries are now focusing on their own interests, and India must do the same.

He assured that the government is already working to protect the interests of farmers, small industries, and the employment of the youth. However, he emphasized that this national goal can only be achieved with the help of all citizens.

A Pledge for a Developed India

Modi also made a special request to shopkeepers and traders to sell only Indian-made goods, especially during the festive and wedding seasons. He said, "Promoting made in India goods will be the truest service to the country."

He concluded by saying that every choice in favor of Swadeshi will help shape the country's future, and through this collective effort, the dream of a developed India will become a reality.
