Players Championship Weather: Storms Loom Over TPC Sawgrass
The "unofficial fifth major" is finally here, but Mother Nature seems intent on making her presence felt at TPC Sawgrass. As the 2026 Players Championship kicks off in Ponte Vedra Beach, golfers aren’t just battling the treacherous island green at the 17th; they’re keeping one eye on the radar as Florida’s unpredictable spring weather moves in.
Thursday’s Rocky Start and Rain Delays
Tournament officials were forced to blow the air horn shortly after noon on Thursday as a wave of heavy showers swept across the Stadium Course. While the initial suspension of play lasted only 21 minutes, the atmosphere remains incredibly volatile.
Forecasters are warning of an 80% chance of thunderstorms through the late afternoon, with wind gusts hitting upwards of 22 mph. This puts marquee groups, including Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth, right in the line of fire for potential second-half delays. If the lightning persists, we could be looking at a Friday morning restart for half the field.
The Weekend "Sweet Spot"
If there is a silver lining for golf fans, it’s the forecast for Friday and Saturday. Once this cold front pushes through tonight, the conditions are expected to be nothing short of pristine.
Friday: High of 72°F, mostly sunny, though a stiff breeze from the ENE (15-20 mph) will keep the scoring in check.
Saturday: A "Moving Day" dream with 77°F temperatures and calm winds, making it the best day of the week for fans to walk the grounds.
Sunday’s Ominous Outlook: A Monday Finish?
Don’t get too comfortable during the third round, though. The forecast for Championship Sunday looks downright grim. Current models show a 60% chance of steady rain and scattered thunderstorms returning to the area.
The PGA Tour is already weighing the possibility of moving up Sunday tee times to avoid a Monday finish. However, with the ground potentially saturated from Thursday's storms, any significant rainfall on Sunday afternoon could easily push the trophy presentation into the following day.
Early Leaderboard and Heartbreak
Despite the gray skies, the golf has been electric. Tommy Fleetwood jumped out to an early lead, sitting at 5-under through 11 holes before the brief weather break. Meanwhile, Max Homa provided the most "Sawgrass" scorecard of the day, featuring an eagle, several birdies, and two costly double-bogeys.
Unfortunately, the weather wasn't the only thing causing trouble. World No. 4 Collin Morikawa was forced to withdraw after just one hole due to a sudden back injury, joining Ryan Fox (illness) on the sidelines.
Stay tuned for further updates as we track the storms and the scores at TPC Sawgrass.
