Sophie Turner Channels Classic Lara Croft in First Look at Prime Video's 'Tomb Raider'
The braid is back, and so are the dual pistols. Amazon MGM Studios has officially pulled back the curtain on its highly anticipated Tomb Raider series, giving fans a stunning first look at Sophie Turner as the legendary archaeologist, Lara Croft. The image, which debuted as production officially kicked off this week, confirms that the Game of Thrones alum is embracing the character’s most iconic roots.
A Wardrobe Fit for an Icon
In the newly released first-look photo—taken during a wardrobe test for the series—Turner is seen sporting the classic teal tank top, tactical brown shorts, and the signature leather backpack that defined the character’s 1996 debut. Perhaps the most exciting detail for long-time fans is the inclusion of red-tinted sunglasses, a stylish nod to the original PlayStation-era Lara that signals this adaptation will lean heavily into a nostalgic, '90s-inspired vibe.
The series, which is being developed for Prime Video, aims to capture the spirit of the early games while grounding the character for a modern television audience. Turner, who rose to global fame as Sansa Stark, is the third actress to take on the mantle in live-action, following in the formidable footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander.
A Legendary Ensemble Joins the Hunt
While Turner is the clear star of the show, Amazon has surrounded her with an elite supporting cast. Earlier this month, the studio confirmed that sci-fi legend Sigourney Weaver has joined the series as Evelyn Wallis, a "mysterious and high-flying" figure who reportedly seeks to exploit Lara’s unique talents.
The production has also tapped Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter) to play Lara’s uncle, Atlas DeMornay, a character deeply rooted in the franchise's lore. Rounding out the household at Croft Manor is Bill Paterson, who will portray the ever-loyal butler Winston, while Martin Bobb-Semple steps into the role of Zip, Lara’s indispensable tech support.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s "Dangerous" Vision
The creative force behind the series is none other than Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The Fleabag creator serves as writer and executive producer, and she hasn't been shy about her lifelong love for the games. Waller-Bridge has previously described the project as a "Trojan horse," suggesting she plans to deliver a "dangerous and exciting" take on the franchise that honors the past while subverting expectations.
“Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can't wait to go on this adventure,” Waller-Bridge said in a statement. “The teenage version of me would probably explode if she knew this was happening.”
With production now in full swing and a cast that balances Hollywood veterans with rising stars, the road to Tomb Raider is finally open. While no official release date has been set, the first look alone has been enough to ignite a fire in the fan base, proving that the world is more than ready for a new era of raiding.
