Boxing Legend Anthony Joshua Survives Fatal Road Accident in Nigeria
The boxing world was plunged into a state of shock on Monday morning following reports that former two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a devastating car accident in Nigeria. While the British-Nigerian superstar miraculously survived with only minor injuries, the incident tragically claimed the lives of two other passengers at the scene.
A Narrow Escape on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
The crash occurred around 11:00 a.m. local time on the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, specifically near the Makun area of Sagamu in Ogun State. Joshua was reportedly traveling in a two-vehicle convoy—consisting of a black Lexus SUV and a Mitsubishi Pajero—heading toward his ancestral home in Sagamu for the New Year holidays.
According to preliminary reports from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lexus SUV, in which Joshua was a passenger, was involved in a high-speed collision with a stationary truck parked along the roadside. Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene, noting that the vehicle appeared to lose control following a sudden tire failure or an unsuccessful overtaking maneuver.
Casualties and Joshua’s Condition
Tragically, the impact of the collision proved fatal for two occupants of the Lexus. Local authorities confirmed that the individual seated next to the driver and the passenger seated directly beside Joshua died instantly.
"Anthony Joshua was seated in the rear of the vehicle," a spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command stated. "He sustained minor injuries and was visibly shaken but conscious when emergency responders arrived at the scene."
Footage circulating on social media showed a dazed and shirtless Joshua being assisted from the mangled wreckage by bystanders and FRSC officials. He was subsequently transported to an undisclosed hospital for further medical evaluation, where he is currently reported to be in stable condition.
A Bittersweet Homecoming
The accident comes just ten days after Joshua’s high-profile victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami. The 36-year-old had traveled to Nigeria to reconnect with his roots and celebrate his recent win with family. Joshua has long been vocal about his pride in his Nigerian heritage, and his visits to the country are usually met with immense fanfare.
Investigation Underway
The Ogun State Police Commissioner, Lanre Ogunlowo, has confirmed that a thorough investigation is being conducted to determine the exact cause of the crash. Early findings suggest that excessive speed may have played a significant role in the severity of the accident.
Promoter Eddie Hearn has also reached out to the boxer’s camp, expressing relief that Joshua is safe while acknowledging the somber nature of the event given the loss of life.
As fans across the globe send their prayers for Joshua’s speedy recovery, the boxing community remains in mourning for the two lives lost in this tragic holiday accident.
